Millions of Craigslist transactions are completed every year safely and without incident, however there are a very small number of transactions where things go wrong. The introduction of the Safe Meeting Places feature by Qwilo seeks to reduce the number of incidences and protect users from criminals and scammers.
Bryan Leptich, lead developer at Qwilo, came up with the idea after one of his friends asked him to accompany them to meet a seller they found on Craigslist. "We're always looking for new ways to improve the Craigslist experience for our users and adding Safe Meeting Places gives our users additional peace of mind when buying or selling something on Craigslist."
With just one click Qwilo users can automatically find the closest police station or coffee shop to safely conduct their Craigslist transactions. Many police stations nationwide have created dedicated safe zones in their parking lots or lobbies just for this type of online transactions. The Safe Meeting Places feature shows the closest 10 locations in a convenient, easy to use map view. By tapping on a location, users can quickly view the address and phone number of the safe meeting location.
"Craigslist is a great place to buy things but there's always a bit of apprehension when meeting a buyer or seller you found on the internet," said Phillip Lee, Product Manager for Qwilo. "We built the Safe Meeting Places feature to make it easier for Craigslist users to find a safe public place where they can conduct their transactions without fear of violence or being scammed." Lee also recommends users always follow Craigslist's Safety Tips when buying or selling anything online:
- Insist on a public meeting place like a café, bank or shopping center.
- Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home.
- Be especially careful buying/selling high value items.
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going.
- Take your cell phone along if you have one.
- Consider having a friend accompany you.
- Trust your instincts.
