CarInsuranceRates.com Responds to National Car Theft Report

SEATTLE, June 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CarInsuranceRates.com has responded to a recent study published by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) that showed vehicle thefts dropped 3.3 percent in 2011. This was the eighth year in a row that estimated theft rates have declined nationwide.

The auto insurance resource features a section devoted to stolen cars and vehicle thefts, providing information for consumers looking to minimize the risk of becoming a victim. Additionally, the website includes lists of the most common and least common stolen vehicles according to the National Crime Information Center and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI).

"While we find the NICB report encouraging, there are still many jurisdictions that feature troubling vehicle theft data," CarInsuranceRates.com spokesperson Nathan Ackerman said. "In addition to providing general car insurance rate information and quotes, we want to equip drivers with relevant information that will reduce their odds of being a victim of theft."

The site explains that car insurance is an important component of overall vehicle protection, including situations such as theft or vandalism. From the site: If you are uninsured and your vehicle is stolen, you are most likely on your own or at the mercy of the authorities. This could translate into a loss of thousands of dollars in addition to the anguish of losing your method of transportation.

CarInsuranceRates.com also recommends keeping a filing system that includes the following information: Certificate of title, detailed locations of keys to the stolen vehicle, information about those who have access to the vehicle, a comprehensive list of all aftermarket equipment and personal property (dollar values included) contained in the vehicle and the contact information of leasing or finance company as well as applicable account information.

"If drivers use the relevant information available, they should be able to dramatically reduce the chances of having a vehicle stolen," Ackerman said. "We often think of car insurance strictly in the context of protection against accidents, but it is equally important when it comes to automotive theft."
