The new firm, Sayres Consulting LLC, advises directors, chief executives and other senior leaders of nonprofit organizations on fundraising, strategic planning and Board development. The firm's approach to nonprofit management, which proved to be effective throughout the economic recession, stresses disciplined innovation, collaboration and transparency. Mr. Sayres also counsels corporate, private and family foundations on how best to define and achieve their philanthropic goals.
Paula Oyer Berezin, President and Chief Strategist of Social Capital, a national agency focused on building sustainable revenue for nonprofits, said, "Ed is an experienced and insightful leader. At the ASPCA, he earned a reputation for honesty and built trust with all of the organization's constituents, enabling him to drive growth in revenue and mission outcomes. He has a remarkable ability to bring people together and identify common ground to build successful partnerships across the nonprofit, private and public sectors."
"My philosophy, inspired by the work of Jim Collins and Robert Wright, begins with ensuring that the organization has a clearly defined core mission and a disciplined, collaborative team that remains focused on the mission while promoting innovation," said Mr. Sayres. "Only when all operations are aligned with the mission, and programs, fundraising and communications are closely coordinated, can the organization achieve meaningful outcomes. By fulfilling your mission through performance in a culture of accountability and transparency, you can develop a reputation for delivering results – and earn the enduring loyalty of donors."
Before assuming leadership of the ASPCA, Mr. Sayres was President of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF/SPCA) and served in leadership positions at PetSmart Charities, the American Humane Association and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center.
About Ed Sayres
Ed Sayres, Principal of Sayres Consulting, was President and CEO of the ASPCA from 2003 to 2013. Under his leadership, the ASPCA significantly increased its brand equity, fundraising, corporate partnerships and mission outcomes; private support grew 280%, making the ASPCA the top public charity for the period according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy; membership tripled to 1.3 million and grant making jumped from $500,000 to $17 million. The ASPCA also developed valuable strategic partnerships with leading corporations including Subaru, Walmart, Target, CVS and Pottery Barn.
At the ASPCA, Mr. Sayres introduced and expanded the collaborative no-kill animal shelter model he had championed as President of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF/SPCA). With his guidance, the ASPCA led a successful initiative, working with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, to reduce euthanasia in New York City shelters. As a result, adoptions of animals in these shelters surged from 25% to 75%. The ASPCA replicated the no-kill model in ten major cities across the country, collaborating with municipal and non-profit animal welfare agencies to provide funding and resources to save at-risk animals in those communities.
Mr. Sayres has served in leadership positions at PetSmart Charities, the Animal Protection Division of the American Humane Association and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. He is a Director of Humane Farm Animal Care, the organization that upholds the standards of the Certified Humane Raised & Handled® program, and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. He earned a Masters degree in psychology from Sonoma State University.
