Employees Work 10+ Hours/Week Remotely With Mobility and BYOD Programs; Evolve IP Survey Concludes

WAYNE, Pa., Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ninety five percent of organizations report either enabling or supporting mobility and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs according to a technology survey conducted by Evolve IP. The report also shows these programs are driving greater productivity for organizations while improving work/life balance for their manager-level associates. The survey of 566 managers, directors and executives provides quantifiable metrics around adoption, productivity, and the effect on the workforce. Key results of the survey show that mobility and BYOD programs are driving greater productivity in the workforce with participants reporting working remotely about 10.5 hours per week. Six in 10 respondents feel their mobile devices enable them to get critical business information in near real-time; and 95 percent feel that these devices have made them more productive than they were 5 years ago. In addition to working remotely, 67 percent of those surveyed reported working while commuting and are adding almost a half an hour (24.5 minutes) to their workday.

Perhaps surprisingly, very few respondents view BYOD or mobility programs that allow them to be "always available" as a negative. On the contrary, 80% feel that the ability to work anytime / anywhere is a positive. Similarly, 80 percent of respondents feel that mobile access enables a better work-life balance by providing the ability to work from home when needed.

Forty-four percent of participants noted they could be even more productive with virtual access to work applications like CRM, billing and support, and 35 percent felt that access to Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their mobile devices would improve their efficiency while working remotely.  Work productivity through remote access could increase further in the coming years as cloud services like virtual desktops (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) gain an even stronger foothold in IT organizations and allow users to work on all of the applications they need from anywhere there is access.

Additional Findings: Adoption

• Nearly half of the participants surveyed (49 percent) report that their organization provides a mobile phone and / or tablet for work use.
• 47 percent of those surveyed are active BYOD participants with 13 percent noting that their device is administered / secured by their organization's IT staff.
• 4 in 10 participants (39 percent) admit to using non IT approved cloud applications on a company supplied or administered device.
• 63 percent report having an iPhone, 28 percent note using an Android device while 4 percent are using a Windows phone.

Additional Findings: Productivity

• 44 percent of those surveyed rate the benefit of being able to work anytime as "extremely important" while 39 percent rate work-life balance the same way.
• One in four respondents estimate that they are between 21 percent - 30 percent more productive in their job than they were five years ago due to mobility / BYOD programs.
• Three in ten respondents use their mobile device to work remotely between six and 10 hours per week.
• Two in 10 who report "working while commuting" spend between 11 and 30 minutes on their mobile device.
• 90 percent of respondents confess to using their mobile device for non-work related functions during work hours. Eighty percent note taking personal phone calls, 74 percent are texting and 60 percent check personal email.

Survey Methodology

Evolve IP conducted a blind, web-based survey during September, 2014 with 566 working professionals (managers, directors, and executives). Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed were from organizations with between 100 and 1,999 employees, largely defined as mid-market, 27 percent were from companies with less than 100 employees while 16 percent came from businesses with more than 2,000 employees.
