He 'Accepted Danger as a Risk of Employment.' Author Kathleen Murray Moran Remembers Reading Those Chilling Words, After Hearing Myesia Johnson's Story

NEW YORK, Oct. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- When someone dies in the line of duty, the widow or next of kin is not entitled to the same answers as those who lose a loved one to a random car accident, suicide, or heart attack.  At a recent talk on her book Life Detonated: The True Story of a Widow and a Hijacker, author Kathleen Murray Moran expressed empathy for Myesia Johnson.  "I wasn't allowed to see Brian's body after the bomb exploded, and it has haunted me ever since."  For Moran, the similarities between the way authorities handled her husband Brian Murray's death 40 years ago and the way Ms. Johnson is being treated today are eerie and just as unacceptable as they were then. 

In a speech delivered at the Hazardous Device School on Redstone Arsenal last week, Ms. Moran said, "When a police officer or solider is killed in the line of duty, the whole department or unit is at your side.  Thousands attend the funeral.  Everyone is there to support the widow.  But after everyone goes home, the crushing loneliness and the questions set in and the full impact of what life will be like hits home."

Moran sees important changes over the past 40 years, "Because of our advocacy through Survivors of the Shield, the benefits are better.  After Brian's death, bomb suits were implemented and have improved vastly since he was on the bomb squad.  But the way widows are communicated with still has a long way to go."
