INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 27, 2012  /PRNewswire/ -- Patriots and Giants fans who are planning a spur-of-the-moment last-minute trip to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl are going to be paying big bucks (upwards of $2000 according to ticket brokers) for not just tickets. A survey from Cheaphotels.org has revealed that they'll also be spending major money for a hotel room unless they are willing to endure a long drive home after the game.

In center city Indianapolis where the football showdown will take place on February 5, hotels are completely sold out. This situation has opened the door for accommodations in the outside neighborhoods to exorbitantly hike their rates on the limited few remaining hotel rooms that are still available.

For example, at the America's Best Value Inn, which is located in the East Indianapolis neighborhood, a room that regularly goes for $66 per night has been jacked up to $990 Super Bowl weekend. That figure represents a 1400% cost increase.

But that's not the highest price gouging that's going on in Indy. Percentage wise, the Knights Inn Indianapolis is boasting an even bigger increase of 1758%. Situated close to the Indianapolis airport, this accommodation will be charging $725 to spend the night over Super Bowl weekend instead of its usually affordable $39.

Long commutes from Lucas Oil Stadium are the only way fans will score more reasonable rates. Not surprisingly, the farther out from the main action game-day visitors go, the cheaper rates they will encounter. In Greenwood, for instance, about 13.2 miles from the center of Indianapolis, a 2-star hotel room can be had for $400. That's "only" a 700% increase over regular rates.

To break the $200 mark will require a 30-mile drive or more. The town of Martinsville, just outside that radius, is offering $200 rooms. Really affordable rates are non-existent until one has driven a good 50 minutes from downtown Indy. In Columbus, the local Day's Inn hotel is charging less than double its usual price over Super Bowl weekend. There, a double room is going for $100.
