Huawei Announces "Seeds for the Future" ICT Program Participants
19 Students from U.S. Universities will Travel to China for a Cutting-Edge ICT Experience and Cultural Exchange
PLANO, Texas, July 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei announced yesterday the selection of 19 university students from across the United States to participate in the second annual "Seeds for the Future" program. Huawei's two-week information and communications technology (ICT) program is designed to support STEM education in the U.S. by bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills, while promoting a greater understanding of the global technology industry through cross-cultural experiences.
"At Huawei, we are excited to bring back this two-week cultural and work experience," said Bill Plummer, vice president, External Affairs at Huawei USA. "Investing in the future of STEM education is important to helping prevent the emerging global skills gap, and the 'Seeds for the Future' program provides students with an opportunity to gain the experience and expertise needed in today's rapidly evolving global technology market."
Huawei's "Seeds for the Future" participants will gain an in-depth understanding of successful and practical skills in ICT through interactions with Huawei staff, visits to Huawei laboratories and exposure to live demonstrations. Additionally, the students will have the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and language first-hand by taking Chinese classes and visiting major tourist attractions, including the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
Receiving over 180 applications for this year's program, Huawei USA selected students from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of academic institutions, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Washington, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of Texas at Austin, and Stanford University.
"As a computer science major and a Mandarin minor, I'm excited to see what I've learned in class applied to real world scenarios, and I think the 'Seeds for the Future' program will bring both of my interests to life," said Mason Porter Herhusky, "Seeds for the Future" participant and computer science student at Purdue University. "I've always wanted to study abroad, and I'm thankful for the opportunity and experience."
Huawei continues to support STEM education around the world through partnerships with educational institutions and various initiatives aimed at improving digital skills. In 2016, Huawei arranged for 77 student groups from more than 60 countries to visit China. Huawei also annually invests more than $10 million into research and collaboration programs, and works with distinguished ICT experts at 50 U.S. universities – including Harvard University, New York University (NYU), Yale University, University of Texas at Austin, and University of California at Berkeley.
