Huawei Supports Availability of OPNFV Arno
First Software Release of Telco-Grade NFV Platform
PLANO, Texas, June 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced its support of OPNFV's Arno availability. Arno is the first software release of the OPNFV project, a community-led, industry-supported open source flexible platform for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), enabling operators to deploy and complete end-to-end testing of a telco-grade NFV platform.
"OPNFV helps accelerate the maturity of NFV, which enables operators and vendors to achieve great success," said Weimin Ying, Huawei NFV Leader and President of Wireless R&D. "Huawei considers the OPNFV community very important, and the Arno release is a significant milestone achievement. Huawei will continue to contribute to the OPNFV and help our customers and partners succeed."
"The OPNFV platform combines a number of Open Source Networking projects into a comprehensive NFV platform," said Dr. Anthony C.K. Soong, OPNFV Director and Chief Scientist for Wireless Research and Standards as well as head of Open Source Networking at Huawei Technologies USA. "The value to our users is that they don't have to spend time and effort gaining the expertise to pull all the components together. OPNFV delivers a reference NFV platform that operators can download, deploy and test immediately in order to accelerate time to market."
This developer-focused release provides the baseline foundation to enable continuous integration, automated deployment and testing of components necessary to build an NFV platform from upstream projects such as OpenStack, OpenDaylight, Open vSwitch, KVM and Ceph. Arno is intended for anyone exploring NFV for proof-of-concepts, developing VNF applications, or wishing to do performance or use case-based testing.
"It has been amazing to see the entire industry rally around the OPNFV project to deliver our first release in just eight months," said Heather Kirksey, director, OPNFV. "Huawei's expertise in networking and contributions to projects like Octopus have allowed us to accelerate the delivery of the industry's first open source NFV platform. Arno is the first step in expediting time to market for NFV and we're pleased to be reaching this first milestone together with our community."
Many users contributed to the enhancements, requirements, testing and documentation to ensure that the platform meets industry needs. Huawei has authored enhancements to carrier grade features such as multi-site deployment, disaster recovery, service chaining, policy management, failure prediction and continuous integration.
Arno is a developer release intended primarily for testing and limited deployment. The software is available for immediate download at the OPNFV website. The project plans to have a cadence of twice-yearly releases. Future releases will continue to improve the platform tooling, enhance testing capabilities, and work with upstream communities to introduce new features.
Huawei is one of the leading companies participating in the software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) field that have joined the OPNFV project. The project will initially look to build NFV infrastructure and virtualized infrastructure management solutions, leveraging existing open-source components. Longer-term, the OPNFV project aims to establish an ecosystem for NFV solutions based on open standards and software, and promote itself as the preferred, open-reference platform in the industry.
