IDEA Introduces IDEA-QMS-9090 Quality Management System Standard

BUENA PARK, Calif., Feb. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Independent Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) announces the publication of IDEA-QMS-9090: Quality Management System Standard for Independent Distributors of Electronics Association Members.

The proliferation of substandard electronic components and the threat they pose to safety, national security, product performance, and successful commerce have long been a source of grave concern to IDEA and its Members and have prompted their action to identify solutions to combat this serious problem. IDEA firmly believes that part of the answer to securing the supply chain resides within an expanded and concerted effort in the cooperation and education of all stakeholders responsible for purchasing and inspection practices through the implementation of relevant standards, training, and certification programs. IDEA has developed IDEA-QMS-9090: Quality Management System Standard for Independent Distributors of Electronics Association Members as a tool to significantly contribute to this purpose.

The objective of IDEA-QMS-9090 is to establish specific requirements and practices Independent Distributors of electronic components can use to help ensure that they satisfy their customers' requirements. These requirements and practices serve to address many of the unique aspects of the Independent Distribution of Electronics Industry which are not addressed in other QMS standards.

In order to assess the Independent Distributor's ability to meet customer requirements applicable to the service that the Independent Distributor provides, certification to this Standard is mandatory for all Independent Distributors that are Members of IDEA. Conversely, only Independent Distributors that are Members of IDEA may become certified to IDEA-QMS-9090. The audit program will be implemented using a desktop compliance verification audit as performed by IDEA Staff for the 2013 Membership year.  It is expected that third-party site audits will be introduced in 2014 and performed at the same time as ISO 9001 and/or AS9100/AS9120 surveillance or certification audits.

IDEA-QMS-9090 follows a succession of industry-changing standards developed by IDEA, including IDEA-STD-1010: Acceptability of Electronic Components Distributed in the Open Market, the first and leading quality inspection standard for electronic components distributed in the Open Market; and the IDEA-ICE-3000 Professional Inspector Certification Exam, which continues to garner industry recognition for providing a validated source for the demonstration of competency in inspection techniques, counterfeit detection, knowledge of industry best practices and standards, and research skills.
