Internationally Renowned Colorectal Surgeon Named Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at NYU Langone Medical Center

Dr. Remzi's arrival also enhances the department's surgical management of patients with complex gastrointestinal conditions including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease, diverticulitis, pelvic pouch procedures, sphincter-saving operations of the rectum, and reoperative abdominopelvic surgery.

Dr. Remzi joins NYU Langone from the Cleveland Clinic, where he had served as chair of the Department of Colorectal Surgery since 2008. Before being named chair, he served in numerous academic and clinical positions within the department of surgery for more than 20 years.

Dr. Remzi will work closely with David Hudesman, MD, assistant professor of medicine and medical director of the IBD Center, to diagnose, treat, and care for patients with IBD. Additionally, Dr. Remzi is a renowned investigator whose ongoing basic science and clinically based research will continue at NYU Langone in hopes of advancing the understanding, treatment, and prevention of IBD.

Background and Training Highlights

A native of Turkey, Dr. Remzi earned his medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey. He completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He is board certified in both general surgery, and colon and rectal surgery.

Dr. Remzi has published more than 320 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the surgical management of IBD, ileal J-pouch surgery, and reoperative abdominopelvic surgery and serves as a reviewer for numerous surgical journals. He has held leadership positions in several surgical societies and serves as an executive council member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is an active member of the American Surgical Association, American Gastroenterology Association, and The Society of Pelvic Surgeons. He is also one of only a few surgeons who is a member of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
