The certification and the modification of the ban on portable Flash media by the U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) allows the FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified DataTraveler 5000 to be used by government entities. Kingston's DataTraveler 5000 is available exclusively to federal and civilian agencies via its DAR (Data-At-Rest) ESI/BPA (Enterprise Software Initiative/Blanket Purchase Agreement) reseller, Autonomic Resources (www.autonomicresources.com).

The DataTraveler 5000 utilizes patented Secured by SPYRUS™ technology which supports hardware-based 256-bit XTS-AES data encryption and Suite B elliptic curve cryptography. The National Security Agency (NSA) Suite B algorithms were specifically selected and approved by the U.S. government and the Department of Defense (DoD) for use in multinational data sharing environments including both classified and unclassified applications. XTS-AES is a block cipher encryption mode that is much stronger than the more common CBC and ECB cipher modes used to secure data on other USB Flash drives. The DataTraveler 5000 uses patented technologies for key management and key encryption operations to shield cryptographic processing from electronic eavesdropping.

The DataTraveler 5000 is based on the same Hydra PC™ security platform from SPYRUS that was used in the Hydra PC Personal Encryption Device. In 2008, this device was the first and only commercial encryption device approved by the NSA to protect classified tactical data at the SECRET level and below for USB Flash drives. The drive is available in 2-, 4-, 8- and 16GB capacities and can also be customized with anti-malware protection and co-logo options.
