Survey Reveals Brits are True Romantics When it Comes to the Cost of Love

The British have always thought of themselves as old romantics and new findings reveal this is still the case as money doesn't stand in the way of true love, according to a survey by voucher code site DiscountVouchers.co.uk.

Nearly 40% of respondents said "there is no price on love" when asked how much should be spent on an engagement ring. A generous 11% felt that the token of love should come in at twice the man's monthly salary; while 30% would pay up to £500 for a ring.

Eager to make a good first impression, sees 75% splashing out on a new outfit for that all important first date and 65% would be happy to split the bill 50/50. Desperate not to appear too extravagant, 67% of respondents said they would avoid choosing the most expensive item on the menu, even if it was their favourite.

In the first three giddy months of love, 57% of respondents were taken out by their partner for an expensive meal and 46% received flowers. A quarter of those surveyed were bought jewellery and nearly 20% were treated to a romantic weekend away. Only 5% were bought new underwear from their latest beau.

After the first flush of love has faded, nearly a quarter of Brits would dump their boyfriend or girlfriend if they thought they were mean with money. A more romantic 37% felt that tightness was not an issue in a relationship, and the same percentage said they would not finish with their partner even if they discovered they were mean with the pennies.

Dating can be an expensive business, with 42% saying they would consider going overdrawn to impress a new lover.

If the path of love runs smoothly and leads to wedding bells, a resounding 94% say the bride's family should not have to pay for the whole wedding.
