WASHINGTON and NEW YORK and LONDON, Oct. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As most stores prep for the biggest shopping day of the year, only 29 days away, outdoor and sporting goods mogul REI has announced they will be closed on Black Friday 2015.
In contrast to other big name retailers, REI will close all 143 stores the day after Thanksgiving, providing a paid day off to encourage their employees to spend the day outside. The store is even choosing not to process any online sales on Black Friday.
Black Friday traditionally marks the kick-off to the holiday shopping season. For many stores, Black Friday is the most important day of the year when sales reach peak heights. According to the National Retail Federation, 86.9 million people shopped on Black Friday in 2014.

Although REI will remain closed on Black Friday, the retail giant can still draw in customers with other sales opportunities. In 2014, it was estimated that 127 million people shopped online for Cyber Monday, while 33% of holiday shoppers said they shopped Small Business Saturday. This year, holiday retail sales are expected to see similar results as last year.
