Morningside Recovery Creates the Performing Arts Substance Abuse Treatment Scholarship

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Morningside Recovery creates the Performing Arts Substance Abuse Treatment Scholarship. The recent death of Cory Monteith, who played the role of Finn Hudson on the enduringly beloved TV show Glee, is a somber reminder that thousands of young people struggle with substance abuse addictions each year. 

Members of the performing arts professions suffer doubly, as those fields of work contain intrinsically higher levels of unemployment and subsequent stress. 

"People in such a high pressure profession are under constant scrutiny and tend to develop issues with depression and anxiety, and, sadly, they abuse substances as a coping skill," explains Morningside Recovery's primary therapist Karen Alonso, LMFT. 

Furthermore, many performers do not have the means to afford in-depth, professional treatment for addictions and substance abuse.

To honor the memory of performers like Cory Monteith who have struggled or lost their lives to substance abuse, Morningside Recovery seeks to impart a constructive benefit for members of the national performance arts community through the creation of this Performing Arts Scholarship, which will provide a full course of substance abuse treatment for one member of the performing arts community each year at no charge.

Frequently, individuals who struggle with substance abuse already have underlying mental health issues that drive their addictions. Since many centers only use Drug and Alcohol Counselors or Interns to perform a bulk of the work, they fail to treat serious underlying issues such as childhood trauma, depression, dual diagnoses, chemical imbalances, and more.  Morningside Recovery's multi-disciplinary team comprised of Medical Doctors, Psychiatrists, Masters and Doctorate-level Psychologists, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers combine to assess, identify, and treat the whole individual, healing not only the addiction, but the mental health issues that often accompany them.

According to Alonso, "Substance abuse and mental health issues are very common among performing artists. The constant competition, inability to be authentic, and pressure to be 'on' drives the incidence of addiction in this line of work to higher than average levels."
