Nearly One-in-Five U.S. Adults Report That They Have Used a Coupon On a First Date, Finds New CouponCabin.com Survey

WHITING, Ind., Oct. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Is frugality the new sexy? With Sweetest Day just around the corner, dating plans are flying around as much as fall leaves. However, the current state of the economy makes affording extravagant dates more challenging. A first date is awkward enough, but a new element has been introduced to the dating game: when your date uses a coupon to help pay the bill.

Despite the stigma that coupons have carried for years, using coupons on dates is no longer frowned upon, according to a new survey from CouponCabin.com (http://www.couponcabin.com), a leading online coupon site. The survey found that nearly one-in-five (18 percent) U.S. adults have used a coupon on a first date. Further, more than one-quarter (26 percent) reported that they would have a positive reaction to their date using a coupon to pay for a first date. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from September 29 – October 3, 2011, among 2,852 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.

Nearly three-in-four (73 percent) respondents reported that if their date used a coupon, they would stay on the date and go out with them again, indicating that thriftiness may now be on the list of qualities people seek in a mate.

"Our survey found that 55 percent of U.S. adults are more likely to use a coupon to help pay for a date due to the current state of the economy," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. "From online coupons to daily deal sites to coupons that print out for you at the cash register, coupons are just about everywhere. It makes sense that more people are using them for dating during these challenging times."

The majority of adults shared that using a coupon for a date is acceptable anytime. They also revealed the following dating circumstances they found acceptable for coupon use:

• Anytime: 73 percent
• When you're married: 37 percent
• When you're a student: 32 percent
• As long as it is not on the first date: 16 percent
• Never: 4 percent

No matter your situation, Warrick offers the following tips to help navigate the dating scene in a coupon-crazed world:

Gauge your date. If you're going to use a coupon on a date, you have two options. If you think your date would be cool with it, make a funny remark and move on. Or, you can sneakily slip it to the waiter on your way to the bathroom. Do NOT put it into the check presenter without addressing it; it only makes it more awkward.

Downsize your date. If you can't afford to pay for dinner without a coupon, why not just go out for drinks instead of dinner? Consider your budget before you commit to a night on the town.
