NYU School of Engineering's Elza Erkip Elected Officer of IEEE Information Theory Society
Professor Is Widely Recognized for Her Research on Wireless Networks
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Elza Erkip, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, has been elected as the second vice president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Information Theory Society, with her term beginning in 2016. Erkip's pioneering work has made possible significant advances in wireless systems.
Erkip will serve in her leadership capacity for a total of five years, ascending to the presidency of the society in 2018.

A fellow of the IEEE, Erkip has received many other honors from the group, including the IEEE Communications Society Stephen O. Rice Paper Prize in 2004, the IEEE ICC Communication Theory Symposium Best Paper Award in 2007, and the IEEE Communications Society Award for Advances in Communication in 2013. She was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Information Theory Society from 2013 to 2014. Currently, she is a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society and a Guest Editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. Additionally, Erkip was a General Chair for the IEEE International Symposium of Information Theory in 2013, an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory from 2009 to 2011, a Technical Program Chair for the IEEE GLOBECOM Communication Theory Symposium in 2009, an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications from 2006 to 2008, a Publications Editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory from 2006 to 2008, a Guest Editor of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine in 2007, and a Technical Program Chair for the IEEE Communication Theory Workshop in 2006.
The IEEE is far from the only organization to recognize her as a star in her field. Erkip, who was among the Thomson Reuters 2014 Edition of Highly Cited Researchers, has also been the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the IBM Faculty Partnership Award. She was elected in 2013 to the Science Academy Society of Turkey.
She is also a faculty member of the research center NYU WIRELESS.
The NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering dates to 1854, when the NYU School of Civil Engineering and Architecture as well as the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute (widely known as Brooklyn Poly) were founded.
