Ordinary Guys; Extra-Ordinary Dreams
How upstart Red Gears Studios is using Kickstarter.com to bring their passion project to life.
LARGO, Fla., Oct. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT IS STEAM WORKS
"This project is one born out of a love for video games and the interactive story telling dynamic that they allow us to have the player experience," says Joe Davison, producer and director of several feature films and short films.
"What we have here, and what I hope to convey to our audience is truly something unique. There are a lot of great games out there; Borderlands one and two, Skyrim, or TitanFall which is coming up; and while I suppose we are in the same vein as far as gameplay mechanics goes, we differ in the way our story is going to be told."
After sitting with Joe and the rest of the guys and girls contributing to this massive project (all for no pay) one begins to get a good idea of the story and scope that the team is hoping to achieve. SteamWorks takes place in an open world sand box that will allow the player to be instantly transported to a steampunk inspired dystopian world replete with sprawling city-scapes, barren wastelands filled with dangerous creatures and scandalous bandit tribes, even a series of sky cities that incorporate airships, gliders, and dangerous sky-pirates. The World of Arcadia was invaded by an Alien force looking for a mysterious device called The God Switch. An all-out war ensued and although both sides forces were decimated, life continues. The alien forces were able to knock out most of the Arcadian's technological advancements, including wide-spread use of electricity, causing a steam-powered industrial age. With the player-defined customization system there will be literally millions of combinations of gadgets, vehicles, and weapons. No two Arcadias will look the same. SteamWorks will also allow the player to choose sides in the battle, which will in turn change the outcome of the game.
Joe Davison's teammate Timothy Paul hopes others will be as excited about this passion project as he is, "We are really excited to have this game being developed, we hope that gamers will rally behind our Kickstarter campaign and take advantage of our incredible giveaways. We are offering opportunities to design creatures and gadgets or even be in our game, voice a character, and come with us to San Diego ComicCon. I think there are a large number of gamers that will really respond to the great story telling device we have come up with added to the incredibly diverse customization system we have. It's really exciting."
SO WHY KICKSTARTER; WHY NOW?
"Its like the old saying, 'strike while the iron is hot'," says teammate and producer Megan Chapnick. "Video Games are booming, more popular than ever, and Kickstarter is the best crowd funding site that there is. It seems a no-brainer to us, that gamers would want to see and support a project like this."
Indeed, Kickstarter has funded upwards of 50,000 projects since its inception in 2009, according to its website. Video games make up a substantial portion of those funded projects. The funds we raise will go to paying the team members that are developing this game. So far they have donated their time and talents for free, only because they believe in this project. But the bills still need to be paid, babies fed, and all those life-type-things that require a paycheck. ALL of them are willing to take a substantial pay cut to make this game a reality, so that's why we need Kickstarter to get our project finished.
