Pacer Pedometer Upgrades Social Features, Becomes Platform for Active Lifestyle

First among the new features, users can now join walking "Groups" directly within the app. Groups are designed to help users be more active in their daily lives by providing accountability, motivation, and even a touch of competition. While many fitness apps provide some social features, most rely on users importing already existing relationships like Facebook friends into their apps. What Pacer does differently is that it allows users to find new friends based on nearby location or a common interest like weight loss.

"We want to solve the problem of users who want social motivation, but who might not have a lot of friends or family already using our app," explained co-founder Michael Caldwell. "Our data shows that users who make social connections within the app are 15% more active on average every day, and are over twice as likely to reach their goals. So we really believe in social support as an important component in promoting health and wellness."

Secondly, users can now share notes and pictures with other users within the app after achieving a daily goal like "10K Steps a Day." This sharing feature lets users record a major achievement, show off a little bit, or give support to other users working toward similar goals. Users can share to just a particular group, or they can choose to share to the entire Pacer community.

To protect user privacy, shared notes and groups can be set as public or private.
