Paul Smith's College Taps Johnson Controls to Implement Sustainability Initiatives

MILWAUKEE, Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Smith's College and Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader in delivering products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, today announced the launch of an energy conservation program across the campus. The program is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings on campus by 22 percent, or more than 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide, while advancing the college's commitment toward achieving carbon neutrality.

The energy savings program includes building and lighting retrofits, weatherization measures and the installation of an integrated building management system, which is expected to save the school more than $4.6 million in energy costs over the next 15 years. The projected reductions are equivalent to saving more than 2,300 barrels of oil each year.

Located in the scenic Adirondack Mountains and ranked among the top 10 schools for students who hunt and fish by Outdoor Life magazine, Paul Smith's College has a tradition of environmental education. The school, long known for its forestry, surveying, fish and wildlife and arboriculture programs, amongst others, recently launched a new program offering a Bachelor of Science degree in natural resource sustainability. The college is one of 680 higher education institutions to sign The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The energy performance contract with Johnson Controls enables Paul Smith's College to reduce utility costs and its carbon footprint. The expected savings will be used to offset the project capital investment over the term of the contract.

The program is expected to be complete in December 2011.
