KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Phenix Brands is pleased to announce the launch of SAMOGON, a clear base spirit new to the U.S. market. The product is currently available in Missouri, Louisiana and Illinois.
SAMOGON was created by master distiller Valery Stepanovich using a recipe dating from the late 1700s. His custom-made still allows him to produce this traditionally homemade spirit on a scale sufficient for distribution, and to make it available for the first time in the U.S. Produced from grapes, wine and pomace, SAMOGON has a flavor that is softer and fruitier than that of vodka, and it is gentle despite its potency (90 proof).
SAMOGON is not a new version of an already familiar spirit, nor is it a liqueur or an ingredient spirit; it represents a new category of base spirit in the U.S. While it is traditionally consumed as a shot in Eastern Europe, American mixologists have an exciting opportunity to utilize it as the base for many new and established cocktails, creating revolutionary applications for a historically humble spirit. In fact, SAMOGON has already made a splash in the mixology community; a SAMOGON cocktail, "From Russia with Love," (created by Arturo Vera-Felicie of Manifesto) was awarded a Chairman's Trophy at Paul Pacult's Ultimate Cocktail Challenge earlier this year.
In its homeland, it's a tradition. Here, it's becoming a revolution!
Tasting notes:
"Clean cut, vibrant mouth feel; not hot; sweet at the beginning but very clean with bright acidity." - Dale DeGroff, King Cocktail
"Skillfully and subtly expresses its raw ingredients. Aromas of orange blossom, fresh white flowers, green pears, tart and ripe lemons. Flavors are more citrus-focused than the aromas; becomes very clean and slightly tart in its finish." - Doug Frost, Master Sommelier, Master of Wine and Spirits
