CALGARY, Nov. 29, 2013 /CNW/ - Safeway today officially launched its annual campaign that invites customers to "Put the Food Bank on your shopping list this season" in the hopes of heightening awareness and donations during this traditionally busy time of year.
Customers can purchase $5 and $10 "Safeway Care Packages" that contain the most needed non-perishable items for the Food Bank at any Safeway store and receive up to 10 bonus Air Miles from November 29 - December 12, 2013. Once purchased, the Care Package can be placed in the food collection bin located at the front of every Safeway store.
"This year Safeway and our customers donated over $10 million in product and financial donations to help feed those in need," said Chuck Mulvenna, President Safeway Operations. "Safeway has been supporting feeding programs across western Canada for almost 85 years and assisting people who need help during the holidays and throughout the year, is a priority for us."
The Holiday Food Drive comes at a time that community organizations, particularly local Food Banks have been stretched to capacity. According to Food Banks Canada 850,000 Canadians access a Food Bank each month for the first time and 36.4% of those turning to Food Banks are children and youth.
Safeway contributes to a broad range of charitable and community programs and in 2012 donated more than $19 million to hunger relief, health and human services, cancer awareness and research, and programs focused on assisting people with disabilities.
