Statement By The End The Beer Tax Now Coalition Regarding The Senate Majority Coalition's Budget Proposal
SEATTLE, April 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The End the Beer Tax Coalition today issued the following statement in response to the Senate Majority Coalition's proposed budget:
"On behalf of retailers, beer wholesalers, large and small brewers and tens of thousands of Washingtonian beer drinkers, we applaud the Washington State Senate Majority Coalition's budget, putting forth a balanced and rationale approach that doesn't single out or penalize a specific industry by imposing a nearly 200% tax increase on their product.
The Senate Majority Coalition understands that extending Washington's unfair beer tax of $23.58 per barrel would cost Washington jobs and put us at a competitive disadvantage with surrounding states. By contrast, Oregon's per barrel tax rate is $2.60 (905% lower), and Idaho's is $4.65, (506% lower) than Washington's. These states' favorable policies keep beer taxes low creating a robust brewing environment and supporting the development and investment in the industry that leads to job growth.
"When this unfair and prejudicial tax increase was enacted in 2010, without a public hearing or input, lawmakers gave us their word that it would be temporary. We are pleased that members of the Senate Majority Coalition recognized the importance of not going back on their promises to Washingtonians."
