Tableau Public Announces Top 100 Vizes of Q4, From Smartphones to Youth Soccer Standings

SEATTLE, Jan. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tableau Software released its quarterly publication of the top 100 Visualizations for Tableau Public for Q4 2010. These are ranked by viewing sessions and online interactions and show trends across the group. The most-visited new visualization was published on Gizmodo and showed supply chain costs for smartphones including the iPhone. The #2 went to Wired.com for a viz on a generational shift in gaming consoles. Redfin.com took the #3 spot with a viz on monthly housing statistics showing pre-frozen winter markets.

The most interactive visualization was published by Steve Eubanks on the Glendora Youth Soccer site. The viz shows standings in a youth soccer league and 91% of viewers interacted with the data by filtering, sorting, or hovering over data for details.

This quarter's top vizes are striking for the breadth of subjects covered:

• Increasing numbers of data journalists have recognized the value of interactive visualizations. The Tahoe Daily Tribune visualized public salary data, The Seattle Times visualized workers compensation and monthly business metrics, and G.W. Schulz at the Center for Investigative Reporting covered iPhone apps.
• Several real estate visualizations made the top 100. In addition to Redfin's, John Wake at Arizona Real Estate Notebook, Steve Brownell at Zillow.com, and Matthew Campbell at Nanaroo all visualized real estate data.
• 18% of top 100 visualizations were published on non-U.S. sites, from Holland's Financieele Dagblad to Swedish site SVT.se.
• Sports data was a popular muse for visualization. In addition to Glendora Youth's soccer stats, Piston Powered covered basketball, CBS Sports continued to visualize baseball and football, and GolfSpy did an interactive product review of golf clubs.
