"The four birds are powerful because they actually exhibit the human personality styles we teach. It's a beautiful example of how wildlife can deepen self-understanding and transform the way we interact with other people," said Rosenberg. "Supporting National Bird Day is an opportunity for us to thank and protect the animals that enrich our work."
National Bird Day, on January 5th, coincides with the end of the annual Christmas Bird Count, the longest-running citizen science survey in the world. Along with the Avian Welfare Coalition, Born Free USA created the event to both protect birds in the wild and educate the public about wild birds in captivity.
Proceeds from The Chameleon e-book will support education on the international trade in wild birds and the need to raise humane standards of care for pet birds. It will also help promote a deeper respect for and understanding of global avian conservation issues.
The parrot, one of Take Flight Learning's birds, is a top priority for wildlife advocates. According to Born Free USA, nearly 12 percent of the world's 9,800 bird species – including nearly one-third of all 330 parrot species – may face extinction within the next century. The exotic "pet" trade, in particular, has had a devastating impact on wild parrot populations.
According to Adam M. Roberts, CEO of Born Free USA, "We are grateful to Take Flight Learning for wanting to collaborate and support the 15th Annual National Bird Day and for their generous promotion in raising much needed awareness and funding. This initiative will certainly further educate the public about the conservation and welfare needs of exotic birds both in the wild and in captivity."
Between January 5 and 7, Take Flight Learning will reduce the price of The Chameleon e-book from $9.99 to $2.99 in order to drive donations. 100 percent of Take Flight Learning's revenue share from each sale will support Born Free USA and National Bird Day.
To celebrate National Bird Day with Take Flight Learning, follow the festivities on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and (of course) Twitter with #WhichBirdAreYou. Take Flight Learning will offer printable Eagle, Parrot, Dove and Owl masks at TakeFlightLearning.com. Print your bird out, take your best pic and post it online to help spread awareness of National Bird Day.
