A major conference next week in Washington D.C. will examine the current state of U.S. relations with the Muslim world and assess what progress has been made since President Obama's Cairo speech last June.
WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Well-known Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan and Rashad Hussain, U.S. Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), will speak at the 11th Annual conference of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID).
The conference will take place on Wednesday, April 28 at the International Trade Center/Ronald Reagan Building in Washington DC. The theme of this year's conference is "U.S. Relations with the Muslim World - One Year After Cairo."
Keynote speakers include the Tariq Ramadan whose travel ban to the United States was recently lifted; prominent American Muslim commentator Reza Aslan; and Rashad Hussain, recently appointed by President Obama to serve as the U.S. Special Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). A special roundtable session will feature the State Department's Special Representative to Muslim Communities, Farah Pandith, with commentary from top analysts Daniel Brumberg, Marc Lynch, and Emile Nakhleh.
The program features leading experts from academia and the think tank world, senior government officials, and a wide range of voices from civil society. Panel sessions will explore issues such as public opinion, youth & development, and the prospects for democracy in the Muslim world.
Two "Voices from the Region" panels will feature leading analysts and opinion-makers from the Middle East and South Asia. One of these is devoted to exploring the prospects and challenges of dialogue with political Islamists, and features representatives from moderate Islamist parties in Morocco, Algeria, and Bahrain.
