According to the authors, physicians rely on laboratory test results for 70 percent of the objective information they receive about the health status of their patients.

"When blood samples are not correctly drawn, patients can be misdiagnosed, improperly medicated, and mismanaged in ways that can be catastrophic," says co-author Dennis J. Ernst MT(ASCP), NCPT(NCCT). "Then there's the financial drag these so-called 'pre-examination errors' exert on healthcare delivery systems. The average 650-bed hospital spends $1.2 million per year unnecessarily because healthcare professionals don't draw and handle blood samples properly."

Ernst, a laboratory technologist and international conference presenter, coauthored The Lab Draw Answer Book with Catherine Ernst RN, PBT(ASCP)CM, a registered nurse and co-author of the industry standards. Both are also certified phlebotomists.  According to the husband-wife team, the book is written for all healthcare professionals who draw blood samples including phlebotomists, nurses, medical assistants, physicians, and emergency personnel.

The 440-page book provides authoritative, referenced, standards-based answers to technical and administrative questions about phlebotomy including:

  • performing venipunctures and skin punctures;
  • patient and healthcare worker safety;
  • management of blood collection personnel;
  • infection control;
  • sample handling;
  • the myriad ways blood collection errors impact patient care.

The authors expect a digital version for e-readers to be released in the next few months.
