VMworld Survey: Enterprises Overwhelmingly Choose On-Premises Private Cloud Deployments

PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- 87 percent of IT professionals currently leveraging private cloud solutions indicate that their companies host clouds on-premises rather than with third-party providers, according to a survey of VMworld 2013 attendees conducted by Metacloud, Inc. Reduced cost (38 percent) topped security (34 percent) as the reason respondents gave for deploying a private cloud.

Of the 195 individuals polled at the VMworld Expo during August 25 – 27:

• Almost three quarters (73 percent) reported that their organization currently has a portion of their computing requirements being handled by the cloud with a majority (48 percent) opting for private cloud over public or hybrid cloud services.
• More than half (51 percent) expect to increase their workloads running in the cloud in the next 12 months, with only four percent expecting to decrease their cloud use over the next year.

Almost half of attendees aren't concerned with shadow IT (47 percent). However, the vast majority (67 percent) of those who do believe shadow IT is a problem found that the easy accessibility of public cloud services has been a major driver in the growth of shadow IT at their company.
