This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for mobile phone shipments worldwide by device vendors. The worldwide mobile phone market will reach a total of 1,925.9 million units shipped in 2014, up 5.4% from the 1,827.5 million units shipped in 2013. Driving volumes higher are smartphones, particularly low-cost smartphones heading for emerging markets. From there, total mobile phone shipments will reach 2,227.5 million units shipped in 2018, resulting in a CAGR of 4.0% from 2013 to 2018.

"Although growth in the mobile phone market is slowing, there are some bright spots to look forward to," says Ramon Llamas, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Smartphones will make up a greater and greater share of all mobile phones shipped, reaching as high as 78.1% by 2018. Similarly, shipments of 4G-capable mobile phones are expected to outpace the overall market, leading to greater data usage. All this adds up to mobile phones taking another step further toward being mobile computers and not simply voice communications devices."
