"Hair gels attracted my interest at about age 13 when I cut my long hair and started using gels. They all caused annoying breakouts and when I heard the same thing from my friends, I started researching gel formulation to try to understand why. One thing led to another and soon I was buying ingredients myself and mixing them in my mom's kitchen. After about a year of trial and error, I hit on a new formulation that was safe, gave great results, and didn't produce breakouts."
Evan balances his new venture with school at Dwight Englewood where he is a sophomore, his YMCA swim team, and high school baseball where he is a pitcher/outfielder. More recently, he became a performing musician as a rock guitarist. His next live show in May 2014 will be a tribute to Southern Rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Yeah, I'm pretty busy," says Evan.
The hair gel Evan developed is called Spikez Galore www.spikezgalore.com. "I started sampling in school among my friends, then built the website after my friends' encouraging comments got me thinking that this could go somewhere. I'm selling in hair salons, too, but the Internet gives me much greater reach." And so began a new company.
In April 2014, Evan will launch his second product, a hair wax. He says, "I'm putting the final touches on it after a year of development. It is designed for finer hair and keeps it soft and pliable throughout the day. With the wax, you get more volume whereas the gel gives a wetter, stiffer look. Now that the company is up and running it will be easier to add more products. I'm having fun, making money and enjoying the challenge of coming up with better, safer products."
