SAN GABRIEL, Calif., June 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On June 22, students with California Virtual Academy (CAVA) @ Los Angeles will walk across the stage at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse to receive their high school diploma. This major academic milestone for these young teens is a moment to celebrate. Another moment these graduates will also celebrate is meeting face-to-face for the first time because many of the online students with CAVA @ Los Angeles have spent the last four years in virtual classrooms developing friendships, but have not physically met. That will all change when they travel to San Gabriel for the graduation ceremony.
"Graduation is my favorite time of year," said Katrina Abston, Senior Head of Schools for California Virtual Academies, a network of 11 different charter schools. "The ceremonies celebrate our students' amazing achievements and connections they have made. These students are proof that education is not a one-size-fits-all approach – the students have made the most of the online education model and individualized curriculum."
Due to the large graduating class of 2016, CAVA @ Los Angeles will host two ceremonies, one in the morning at 11:00 A.M. and one in the afternoon at 2:00 P.M.
Commencement speaker at the graduation ceremonies will be performer and music artist Sade Champagne. She will talk about how she overcame her own challenges and will encourage graduates to believe in themselves.
CAVA @ Los Angeles valedictorian Andrew Uesugi will also speak at the 11:00 AM ceremony. Andrew has earned a weighted GPA of 4.54, while challenging himself with Honors and AP level courses. He has been a member of Deans High Honor list every semester at CAVA @ Los Angeles and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the American Mensa High IQ Society. This fall Andrew will attend UCLA where he plans to major in Biology with a long term career goal of becoming an ophthalmologist and helping to find a cure for glaucoma.
The virtual school setting that CAVA @ Los Angeles provides creates a flexible learning environment for students, allowing them to complete their work on a schedule that works best for them. Students use an award-winning curriculum and California state-certified teachers provide students with a personalized learning plan, helping ensure that they meet their academic goals and achieve success.
Media is invited to attend the celebration and event details are provided below.
