2012 Davos Sees 'Rise of Powerhouse Nations', Says Brazil's Business Leader Mario Garnero
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mario Garnero, founder and chairman of Brasilinvest, Brazil's foremost merchant bank, welcomed the "cautious optimism" that marked statements by both government and private sector representatives during the 2012 Edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) held the past few days in Davos, Switzerland.
"The upbeat feeling has to do with the sustained rise of 'Powerhouse Nations' to prominence in the global economy," so proposes Garnero as Brazil, Russia, India and China move center stage.
"I see the Powerhouse Nation concept as comprising the original BRIC and the 'N11', Garnero describes, referring to the coinage by Goldman Sachs' Jim O' Neill of 'N11', a group of growth countries that includes Mexico and Indonesia, among others. "These growth markets have gone from merely attracting attention to the very core of the global economic engine," adds the chairman of Brasilinvest.
Mario Garnero has contributed his fare share to the protagonism of growth markets. A long-time champion of foreign direct investment in Brazil and a pioneer of biofuel entrepreneurship, Garnero organized as early as 1975 the Salzburg Meeting aimed at boosting partnerships in Brazil and other up-and-coming economies.
Many attendees of the 2012 WEF participated in Garnero's Salzburg Summit and believe it to have inspired and influenced Klaus Schwab, founder of WEF, to expand the focus of Davos towards becoming an event on the world economy.
Garnero greets his role in sparkling the global debate on the potential of countries like Brazil or China with modesty. Although proud of his achievements, he sets his eyes firmly on the future.
"It is high-time for us to promote partnerships that foster innovative cross-border transfers of knowledge, such as WISeKey," referring to the E-security and identity management firm founded by Carlos Moreira. WISeKey is a WEF 'Global Growth Company' and partners with Brasilinvest in markets across the globe.
2012 will see Mario Garnero leading numerous conferences on Brazil, Latin America and his global advocacy for sustainable development.
Brasilinvest and MIT will hold the XV Latin American Conference in Cambridge, MA, on March 10. Speakers at that juncture include Brazil's VP Michel Temer, OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza, and Roger Agnelli, former CEO of Brazil's mining giant Vale.
Garnero will also host the General Assembly of WFUNA, the World Federation of United Nations Associations in Rio de Janeiro in June, prior to the Rio+20 Summit of Heads of State and Government.
