DETROIT, Dec. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 2016 Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2016 of one of the most inspirational movements to help end breast cancer. Registration is now underway for the 25th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, which will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Chene Park on Detroit's beautiful riverfront. This year's 5K Race Route will take both runners and walkers down East Jefferson and return via the beautiful RiverWalk.

There's Victory in Every Step

Since the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure first began in 1992, the Karmanos Cancer Institute has served as the local presenting sponsor. The Komen Detroit Race, which is a top tier Race event in Komen Race series and among more than 100 Komen Races held around the world, has raised and invested nearly $29 million since 1992 to help end breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised each year help support local breast cancer programs; and 25 percent help fund national breast cancer research.

Thanks to the community's support of the 2015 Komen Detroit Race, more than $918,000 was awarded to four programs serving Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, each aimed to meet the unique needs of the metro Detroit community to help save lives and end breast cancer. In addition, approximately $275,000 went to fund Komen's national breast cancer research and training grants program.

Globally, Susan G. Komen has invested more than $2.6 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries.

Katrina Studvent has seen first-hand the progress this breast cancer movement continues to make. A ten-year breast cancer survivor herself, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 30 with no family history of the disease. She was young, scared and wondered what the future would bring. At the time, she had only been married for a few years and her daughter was 13 months old. At Studvent's first Komen Detroit Race, she was asked to participate in the Survivor Honor Guard and held a sign noting the number of months she had survived her breast cancer.

"It was a moving experience, one I'll never forget," said Studvent. "There I was, holding a sign representing newly diagnosed survivors but also those who are young. It spoke volumes and represented other young women who were just as scarred as me and needed to know that they were not alone."

Today, Studvent is the chair of the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® and also serves as director of Breast Cancer Special Programs at Karmanos Cancer Institute.

"We have made tremendous progress in the breast cancer fight, thanks to the incredible commitment of Susan G. Komen; and the smart and gifted researchers and physicians at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University and other organizations around the globe. Today, there are more than three million breast cancer survivors in the United States, including an estimated 155,000 with metastatic disease – the 'forever fighters' who are constantly in treatment."

Studvent added, "We have come a long way but our work is far from over. Our latest needs assessment on our Detroit service area representing Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties showed a significantly higher incidence of late-stage diagnoses and deaths from breast cancer compared to the rest of Michigan. Supporting our annual Komen Detroit Race will help close the gap on these disparities. We hope we can count on everyone's support."

Welcomed Traditions and New Surprises

The 2016 Komen Detroit Race will continue many of its wonderful traditions including the Children's Area, vendor giveaways, Survivor Trolley, Survivor Café, dancing on the Pink Carpet, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, bands along the Race Route and so much more. The 2016 Race will also have an exciting new Race Route, showcasing the beauty and resurgence of Detroit's RiverWalk, along with other new surprises.

"We refer to this day as 'one of the best days in the city of Detroit,' with more than 25,000 participants wearing their Race shirts and holding their Race team signs to help raise awareness and funds for this cause," said Brian Christy, co-chair of the Komen Detroit Race.

"This disease touches all of us. Taking part in the Komen Detroit Race not only unites us in this cause but we're also making a difference, raising funds for programs that help the underserved right here in our community, providing breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment services, as well as supporting cancer research. We invite everyone to join us on Saturday, May 21."

About Susan G. Komen
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan's compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. That promise is now Susan G. Komen®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $2.6 billion since inception in 1982. As the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we're working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
