CHICAGO, Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sept. 15, 2013 sale of 20th Century Art & Design at Treadway/Toomey Galleries found buyers chasing a wide range of objects. Attention was most evident on rare and extraordinary pieces, of all price ranges. The market continues to show strength at every level, especially for quality items in good condition. Auction results and high-res photos are available at http://www.treadwaygallery.com/Sept2013PR/TreadwayPressRelease09-15-2013.htm.

Arts & Crafts furniture was solid, with the highest price garnered by a Gustav Stickley bookcase at $18,300. A group of Limbert furniture pieces did well, bringing $25,000. Ceramics also seemed to be popular especially with regard to Pewabic and Teco, two Midwest products. Among the Pewabic examples, there were prices paid that doubled presale estimates, the group brought in over $35,000. Lighting was also sought after, evidenced by the 30 examples by a wide range of makers that were offered and sold.

The Fine Art session also found buyers focusing on rare objects by blue chip names. John Lennon's Bag One rarely comes up at auction as a complete suite and this was evident as the final price of $47,580 more than tripled the low estimate. Dale Nichols' Twilight from 1981 was a late painting by the artist but was representative of the subject matter that collectors covet. The subject along with the near perfect condition drove the price to $42,700, more than doubling the low estimate. A beautiful piece by contemporary Korean artist Chun Kwang Young, from 2001 made up of countless pieces of Korean mulberry paper did well. This was a departure from what Treadway/Toomey is known for handling but achieved a solid price of $34,160 against an estimate of $30,000-50,000.

Interest in Mid-century modern remains high across the board, particularly for iconic designs. The auction featured a large selection of classic Edward Wormley designs for Dunbar, including an angled sofa that sold for $5,795. Prices for Scandinavian items were strong with two Borge Mogensen cabinets selling for $7,320, a Hans Wegner "Sawbuck" arm chair selling for $2,196 and a set of Arne Jacobsen flatware selling for $2,196. Interest remains high for designs by Pierre Jeanneret from Chandigarh, India. A pair of armchairs from the Chandigarh High Court reached $11,590 and a student desk and chair reached $5,490 and $3,294. Rounding out the sale were a number of good decorative items, including a Clyde Burt wall plaque for $3,660, a Tommaso Buzzi Laguna vase for Venini $6,710 and an Ettore Sottsass Murmansk centerpiece at $5,795.

The next 20th Century Art & Design auction is December 7, 2013. Interested parties can contact Don Treadway at 513-321-6742 or at info@treadwaygallery.com. Please visit http://www.treadwaygallery.com/ for auction previews and catalogs.
