ISTANBUL, May 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- "International Research Projects Contest," implemented in 1991 by the MEF Educational Institutions with the intent of supporting high school students all over the world eager to develop scientific solutions to current problems, marks its 25th year. Leaving behind a quarter century this year, the contest had its opening ceremony on Tuesday May 10, 2016, in Istanbul, Turkey, where Harvard & MIT teaching fellow Prof. Mehmet Toner gave an eloquent speech.
579 Project submissions by 27 countries were made to the contest, and 169 students passed the preselection to be found to qualify for the final round. After the opening ceremony, the students took their places next to their exhibition stands, where they will be presenting their projects for the next three days. Halil Unlu, Arikanli Holding General Coordinator; Prof. Muhammed Sahin, MEF University Chancellor and Azmi Ozkardes, MEF Schools General Manager joined Prof. Mehmet Toner as they visited the exhibition stands and learned more from the students about their projects.
The contest, which has provided many winning projects with the opportunity to be implemented in the Turkish industry, has also helped the winners to win scholarships from some of the leading universities of the world in the past years.
This year's contest features projects in areas such as energy, technology, environment, health, food, automotive, marine, construction and transportation.
This year's projects, including but not limited to the development of nano-material to counteract the signs of aging; ways of treating Alzheimer's disease and lung cancer; robots that detect gas leakage where there is explosive charge; ways to use recycled tires for industrial materials in buildings; detection of location within mines through flight time; and the use of corn cobs to refine the vegetable oils and engine oils polluting natural water sources, all developed by high school students both from Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Iraq, Kirghizstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, the Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Ukraine offer a promising future for the world's scientific research milieu.
The award ceremony ending the "25th International Research Projects Contest" will take place on Friday May 13, 2016 at MEF Schools Ulus Campus in Istanbul, Turkey. First place, second place, third place, and encouragement awards will be given in three different categories to the winning students and their teachers along with a monetary award. All participating students, their teachers and their school principals will be awarded with certificates of achievement and plates.
