The technologies of 3-D scanning are linked by their use of an active, but noncontact, sensing process. The term "active" in this report relates to 3-D scanner projects, specifically the means by which a 3-D scanner detects the scanned object, with the specific means being either a laser beam or a pattern of light and dark areas, depending on the technique utilized. An example of the active versus passive sensor dichotomy is illustrated as follows: the difference between active and passive sonar, where the passive sonar merely listens for a target, whereas the active sonar projects a pulse whose reflection from the target is used to localize it.
