4G LTE Makes Advances in Europe Light Reading coverage shows how mobile operators such as EE in the UK are basing their strategies around network investments and partnerships with suppliers such as Huawei Technologies.

While much of the reporting on LTE-Advanced has focused on Asia/Pacific (most particularly South Korea) and North America, there have also been significant developments in Europe and the Middle East, where operators such as EE, the leading mobile service provider in the UK, and Zain Kuwait have been preparing for the commercial launch of services that will enable broadband connections to smartphones that are much faster than average fixed broadband connections. Both operators have been working closely with Huawei Technologies on their network and service developments.

In London's Tech City, which is home to more than 1,300 technology startups, EE has switched on what it claims is the world's fastest mobile broadband network, capable of connections of up to 300 Mbit/s using radio access network technology from Huawei, which held a successful Global Mobile Broadband Forum event in London in early November.

At the event, EE's CEO, Olaf Swantee, noted that emerging technologies such as LTE-Advanced were not just for specialist users but were for the delivery of mainstream broadband services to millions of people. "It's not just for technofreaks. Data usage is set to rise by 750% during the next three years," he told an audience of hundreds of mobile industry executives.
