$6 Million Stadium Groundbreaking in Rosemont
Gold medalist Jennie Finch honored with street naming
ROSEMONT, Ill., Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Construction is underway in Rosemont on a new $6 million professional stadium for the Chicago Bandits professional women's softball team. Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens, Olympic Gold Medalist and retired Bandits pitcher Jennie Finch and Bandits owner Bill Sokolis were on hand for the official groundbreaking today.
"This is great news for sports fans all around Chicagoland," said Mayor Stephens. "Rosemont is home to the Chicago Wolves hockey team, the WNBA's Chicago Sky, and the DePaul Blue Demons men's basketball team. The Bandits add another option for affordable family entertainment."
The site is located just south of Interstate 190 and west of I-294. The new street for the stadium will be named Jennie Finch Way, in honor of the championship pitcher.
"Chicago and the Bandits have been such a big part of my career. They are both in my heart, and to be honored this way is nothing short of amazing," Finch said. "I am so grateful to have been a Bandit and to have played softball professionally in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch). I am thrilled the team will have a new facility in Rosemont that is a reflection of their talent and professionalism. The team has a bright future, and I look forward to watching many games and cheering on my Bandits!"
The new home of the Chicago Bandits will be built to comply with all NCAA standards so that it can also be used for college championships or tournaments. Construction should be completed in time for the 2011 season. Plans call for 2,000 permanent seats along with expansion area for more temporary seating should it be required for certain events.
The Village of Rosemont also has plans for expanding the site into an athletic facility with ancillary fields and a youth academy that will focus on sportsmanship, life and leadership skills for boys and girls.
