New Indoor Positioning System pinpoints mobile distress signals down to the floor and room
CLEVELAND, Sept. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- 911Cellular, the technological leader of smartphone-enabled public safety systems, has developed an Indoor Positioning System that enables police to instantly locate a distress signal down to the floor and room number of a multi-story building. This cloud-based system uses an institution's existing IT infrastructure. It requires no additional equipment or wiring and offers a substantial cost savings over hardware systems.
"This system is a life saver," said U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, during a press conference at Sacred Heart University, after the system was implemented. "This application should be the standard for the whole country."
More robust than a standalone smartphone app, the Indoor Positioning System is customized to the unique architecture of each university, hospital or municipality. Tested in several universities nationwide, the system has reduced emergency response times by as much as 85 percent, said Chad Salahshour, a 30-year police veteran, who spent three years developing the technology.
"Callers in distress often can't identify their own location," Salahshour said. "Now dispatchers know exactly where in a building each smartphone signal originates, and the caller never has to say a word. If the phone moves, inside or out, the location updates online for police every 10 seconds."
The Indoor Positioning System is the latest enhancement to the full suite of mobile safety systems from 911Cellular. End users access the system through an app on their Apple or Android device, where they can complete emergency information for first responders to use when needed.
Because the System relies on existing IT architecture, institutions find significant cost and time savings over dedicated positioning systems that are less effective and more intrusive. 911Cellular can implement the Indoor Positioning System in less than a week.
