STD testing is important. The Center for Disease Control noted in a 2016 report that Americans were infected with more than 2 million new cases of gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, the highest number of these sexually transmitted diseases ever reported.
The CDC reported in their annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report that more than 1.6 million of the new cases were from chlamydia, 470,000 from gonorrhea and close to 28,000 cases were primary and secondary syphilis, the most infectious stages of the disease.
States are seeing increases of STDs cases at local level too. In May 2018, the California Department of Public Health released a report showing a 45 percent increase in cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis between 2012 and 2017. In 2017, California saw the highest level of incidence of chlamydia since 1990 with 218,710 documented cases.
