A sweeping regional response to confront growing threat of discarded pharmaceuticals entering landfills, bays and wetlands
"Dispose My Meds" program seeks to enroll every Long Island consumer
MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y., Nov. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To confront and halt what experts are calling the growing environmental threat of discarded pharmaceuticals finding their way into our bays, estuaries and landfills, a Long Island wide program designed to capture and properly dispose of those medications will be announced on Thursday, November 13 at 11:00 a.m. beside the wetlands of John J. Burns Park, 4990 Merrick Rd, Massapequa Park, NY, by a coalition that includes United Water, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, King Kullen Supermarkets, the Suffolk County Water Authority and Nassau County Edward P. Mangano.
The regional response follows the successful introduction of a pilot program in Nassau County last year that has already captured hundreds of pounds of discarded pharmaceuticals. An aging population, the ever growing demand for medications and a consumer base unaware of the threats posed by inappropriately discarded pharmaceuticals has prompted this regional response to an increasing environmental menace.
Officials will display a container filled with discarded pharmaceuticals estimated to enter our Long Island ecosystem every ten minutes to underscore the amount of medications placing our environment at risk.
