ABMS Selects 2018-2019 Visiting Scholars

CHICAGO, Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Research and Education Foundation (REF) has selected seven outstanding individuals to participate in its 2018-2019 Visiting Scholars Program.

Launched in 2014, the one-year, part-time program supports early career physicians and scientists in scholarship and leadership development in the fields of physician assessment, continuing professional development, medical education and training, health and public policy, and quality improvement (QI). For the fourth year, the class includes a Visiting Scholar who will be co-sponsored by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS); for the second consecutive year, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is supporting the participation of two Visiting Scholars whose research will focus on ways to improve diagnosis.

"The Visiting Scholars Program provides a great opportunity to engage young physician leaders and researchers in the Boards Community," stated Richard E. Hawkins, MD, ABMS President and Chief Executive Officer. "The program facilitates the scholars' research in areas including physician assessment and professional development. The program also exposes them to mentors throughout the Boards Community, encouraging them to develop their leadership capabilities, expand their professional network, and further their career growth."

The 2018-2019 class members and their areas of interest are:

• Amy Cizik, PhD, MPH, Research Assistant Professor, University of Washington –Using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Practice Improvement in the Certification and Recertification of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABMS/ABOS Scholar)
• Kevin Cullison, MD, Post-doctoral Research Fellow, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine – Development of Chief Complaint-Based Quality Measures for the Management of Emergency Department Patients with Chest Pain (Project supported by a grant to the ABMS REF from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.)
• Brian George, MD, MA, Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Michigan – The Predictive Validity of the American Board of Surgery Examinations for Surgeon Performance
• Caitlin Hicks, MD, MS, Vascular Surgery Fellow, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine – A Physician-to-Physician Approach to Reducing Unnecessary Procedures in Vascular Surgery
• Brenessa Lindeman, MD, MEHP, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medical Education, University of Alabama at Birmingham – Entrustment as a Framework for Surgical Resident Assessment
• Rodney Omron, MD, MPH, Faculty Department of Emergency Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine – Using an Online Course to Teach Clinicians How to Make Fewer Medical Errors: A Primer Using Dizziness in Stroke (Project supported by a grant to the ABMS REF from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.)
• Victoria Wurster Ovalle, MD, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center – Assessing the Implementation of the Behavioral/Mental Health Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) for General Pediatrics
