According to AshleyMadison.com Survey, Most Men Consider Digital Dalliances an Act of Infidelity
Extra-marital Dating Service Asks their Members if Texting, Emailing, and Online Flirting Constitutes "Cheating"
TORONTO, Nov. 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- "Digital lipstick" in the form of naughty text messages has brought about the demise of plenty of celebrity marriages. For Hollywood's cheating scandal du jour, reports state that Tony Parker didn't even stray physically from his "housewife" of four years, but his superfluous third-party texting was enough to spur Longoria to file for divorce. Since news of number 9's indiscretions broke last week, AshleyMadison.com Founder Noel Biderman's interest was piqued over whether most people consider secret texts, emails, calls, Skyping and "iChats" to be the makings of an actual affair.
According to Biderman, there are three factors that separate questionable behavior from a full blown cyber-affair and they consist of: significant amount of time invested, having an emotional connection (exchanging 'I like you's' or 'I love you's'), and keeping the communication a secret from your partner.
Of 6500 members surveyed on the site since the news break, 84% of men agreed that it qualifies as an affair if it possesses those three characteristics. On the flipside, females felt 21% less guilty about their indiscretions with only 63% of women surveyed considering that behavior to be indicative of actual "cheating." According to Biderman, the discrepancy between the sexes is sociological. "Women engage in these virtual connections more often than men, and therefore consider it to be more typical behavior."
Biderman says the other factor that's drastically impacting the battle of the sexes is the wave of new technology available. "Technology is changing the cheating landscape. With the proliferation of smart phones, iPads, proxy servers and other technological advancements, it's both easier to cheat and also easier to get caught. If you leave behind a digital trail, your partner doesn't need to be a private investigator to read your text messages or hack into your email account."
