Addiction Recovery Centers See Uptick in Healthcare Professionals Entering Treatment for Heroin, Opioids

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Institute of Health reports that approximately 10 to 15 percent of all healthcare professionals will misuse drugs or alcohol at some point during their career, which means healthcare professionals are at the same risk of substance abuse as the general population.
In the past two years, addiction recovery and rehabilitation centers across the country have experienced a skyrocket in admissions of professionals of all types — from medical students, residents, pharmacists and dentists to attorneys, business owners, IT professionals and corporate executives — for heroin addiction treatment.
At Chicago-based Positive Sobriety Institute, for example, the number of healthcare professionals who enter treatment for heroin addiction has more than tripled during this period. A Different Approach for Addicted Professionals
The general population sees an outcome of 40 to 60 percent recovery following treatment. However, studies conducted by Robert DuPont, MD, and Mark S. Gold, MD, of RiverMend Health's Scientific Advisory Board found that medical professionals treated in specialty addiction programs and monitored by physician health programs achieve nearly an 80 percent ongoing abstinence rate.
During his presentation at the iconic Shutters on the Beach Hotel, Dr. Angres will review approaches to assessment, treatment and outcomes of addicted physicians with comparisons of other addicted professional groups, including business leaders, legal professionals and professional athletes.
Additionally, Kathy Bettinardi-Angres, APN, Director of Multidisciplinary Assessments at Positive Sobriety Institute, will hone in on the components of the Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Assessment Program (M-CAP), an alternative to the traditional intervention, which can be completed within two to three days to determine if an employee is or is not able to perform essential job functions because of psychological or psychiatric conditions.
