("Affinia"), an innovative global leader in the design, manufacture, distribution and marketing of industrial grade products and services, today reported net sales of $336 million for the fourth quarter of 2014 compared to $338 million in the fourth quarter of 2013, a decrease of $2 million or 0.6%. Adjusted EBITDA improved to $37 million in the fourth quarter of 2014 compared to $36 million in the same period in the prior year, an increase of 2.8%.
Filtration segment net sales were $235 million, which is a record for the fourth quarter, resulting in a 4.9% improvement over the fourth quarter of 2013. Adjusted EBITDA for the Filtration segment was $37 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, an increase of $4 million or 12.1% compared to the corresponding period in the prior year. Affinia South America segment net sales were $102 million, which is $12 million or 10.5% lower than the fourth quarter of 2013. On a currency adjusted basis, Affinia South America segment net sales were $117 million, a $3 million or 2.6% increase over the fourth quarter of 2013.
Keith Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "During the fourth quarter of 2014, our global businesses continued to deliver strong operational and financial performance. In 2014, our Filtration segment achieved record sales and earnings, with improvement across all regions. Overall, 2014 was a year of significant growth as we continued to gain market share around the globe as a result of enhancing our product portfolio, investing in manufacturing capabilities and improving our distribution footprint. We remain committed to delivering superior quality and innovation, while focusing on continuously improving the service and value we provide to our customers."
Free cash flow, which is operating cash flow less capital expenditures, was $8 million in the fourth quarter of 2014. Trade working capital was $221 million at December 31, 2014, a decrease of $39 million from the third quarter of 2014.
"We delivered strong free cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2014, which allowed us to further reduce debt levels while continuing to invest in our business. As of year-end, our leverage ratio has improved to 4.5 times the trailing twelve months' Adjusted EBITDA compared to 5.2 times at the end of 2013. Our focus is currently on executing on our 2015 business plan, as well as delivering on our overall growth strategies," stated Steven Klueg, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
Net Sales
Net sales were $336 million for the fourth quarter of 2014 compared with $338 million for the same period last year. On a currency adjusted basis, net sales for the fourth quarter of 2014 improved by 9.5% or $32 million over the same period in 2013. The Filtration segment achieved record fourth quarter net sales of $235 million in 2014, a 4.9% increase over the prior year, primarily attributable to our North America operations due to higher volumes of premium heavy duty and light duty products, as well as growth through new product introductions and capturing new business. On a currency adjusted basis, Filtration segment net sales for the fourth quarter improved $29 million or 12.9% compared to the prior year. Net sales in the Affinia South America segment were $102 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a 10.5% decrease compared to the same period in the prior year, due primarily to the decline in value of the Brazilian Real and Argentine Peso. On a currency adjusted basis, net sales for the fourth quarter of 2014 improved by $3 million or 2.6% over the same period in 2013 as a result of increases in our Brazilian and Argentine distribution companies from new product introductions and growing market share through expansion of our distribution capabilities.
Operating Profit
Operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2014 was $31 million, a $9 million increase over the prior year. Operating profit in the Filtration segment was $33 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a $5 million increase over the prior year, primarily due to improved gross profit in North America as a result of higher volumes of premium products, which carry better margins, and strategic cost savings initiatives. Operating profit in the Affinia South America segment was $8 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a decrease of $3 million compared to the same period in 2013. This decrease was largely due to incremental costs associated with inventory reduction initiatives, costs associated with the distribution branches opened in 2014 and higher costs associated with imports.
Adjusted EBITDA
Adjusted EBITDA was $37 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a $1 million increase over the corresponding period in the prior year, with Adjusted EBITDA margins improving to 11.0% in the fourth quarter of 2014 from 10.7% in the fourth quarter of 2013. Adjusted EBITDA for the Filtration segment was $37 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a $4 million improvement over the same period in the prior year, due to higher operating profit in North America. Adjusted EBITDA for the Affinia South America segment was $9 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, a $4 million decline compared to the prior year as a result of lower operating profit.
Net Income
Net income was $25 million in the fourth quarter of 2014 compared to a net loss of $4 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. Higher net income was driven by improved sales and operating profit, lower interest expense as a result of debt repayments during 2014 and lower income tax expense due primarily to the reversal of an income tax reserve.
Full Year Results
Net sales were $1,396 million for full year 2014 compared with $1,361 million for the same period last year. On a currency adjusted basis, net sales for full year 2014 improved by 10.0% or $136 million over the same period in 2013. The Filtration segment achieved record full year net sales of $967 million in 2014, a 7.2% increase over the prior year. On a currency adjusted basis, full year net sales improved $111 million or 12.3% compared to the prior year. Net sales for the Affinia South America segment were $430 million for full year 2014, a 6.3% decrease compared to the same period in the prior year, due primarily to the decline in value of the Brazilian Real and Argentine Peso. On a currency adjusted basis, net sales for full year 2014 improved by $25 million or 5.4% over the same period in 2013.
Adjusted EBITDA for full year 2014 was $171 million, a $9 million increase over the corresponding period in the prior year, with Adjusted EBITDA margins improving to 12.2% in 2014 from 11.9% in 2013. Full year 2014 Adjusted EBITDA for the Filtration segment was $164 million, a $19 million or 13.1% improvement over the same period in the prior year. Full year 2014 Adjusted EBITDA for the Affinia South America segment was $38 million in 2014, a $3 million decrease compared to the prior year.
Net income was $82 million for full year 2014 compared to $10 million in the prior year.
Balance Sheet
Affinia ended the fourth quarter of 2014 with $45 million of cash on hand and a total debt balance of $811 million. Net debt as of December 31, 2014 declined to 4.5 times the trailing twelve months Adjusted EBITDA from 5.2 times the trailing twelve months' Adjusted EBITDA as of December 31, 2013. During the fourth quarter, Affinia paid down $14 million of outstanding term loans and made a distribution to shareholders of $9 million to further reduce the seller note.
Non-GAAP Financial Information
In addition to the results reported in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America (GAAP) included within this press release, Affinia has provided certain information which is considered non-GAAP financial measures. Such information is reconciled to its closest GAAP measure in accordance with Securities and Exchange Commission rules and is included in the attached supplemental data.
EBITDA, Segment EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA, and Adjusted Segment EBITDA are non-GAAP financial measures. EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Affinia's EBITDA is calculated by adding back depreciation and amortization and interest expense to income from continuing operations before income tax provision. Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted Segment EBITDA are defined as EBITDA adjusted for certain items that management believes hinder comparison of the performance of Affinia's business either period-over-period or with other businesses. Items are excluded from Adjusted EBITDA and Adjusted Segment EBITDA because they are individually or collectively material items and management does not consider them to be representative of the performance of the business during the periods presented. Management believes that these non-GAAP financial measures are useful to both management and the Company's stakeholders in their analysis of the Company's business and operating performance. Management also uses this information for operational planning and decision-making purposes.
Currency adjusted net sales excludes the impact of currency on current period results by applying the same exchange rates to net sales in both periods. To calculate currency adjusted net sales, the exchange rates used in the prior year are applied to the current year results. By excluding the impacts of currency, management believes the comparability of financial results between reporting periods is enhanced.
Net debt represents total debt outstanding less cash on hand at period end.
Non-GAAP financial measures are not and should not be considered a substitute for any GAAP measure. Additionally, non-GAAP financial measures as presented by Affinia may not be comparable to similarly titled measures reported by other companies.
In accordance with Securities and Exchange Commission rules, each of Segment EBITDA, Adjusted Segment EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA is reconciled to its closest GAAP measure, which is income from continuing operations before income tax provision and noncontrolling interest and is included in the attached supplemental data. Currency adjusted net sales are reconciled to their most closely correlated GAAP measure, which is net sales.
