WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement:
"Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas today announced that thousands of law enforcement officers within Immigration and Customs Enforcement who have been paid at a lower pay scale than their colleagues will be reclassified at the correct level. These changes have come as a result of the joint efforts of the AFGE National ICE Council and ICE and DHS leadership.
"These officers and agents have been performing tremendously important work at a very high level of complexity for ICE's Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations for years. DHS acknowledged that the national security and public safety responsibilities assigned to these agents deserved a higher classification. Today's announcement starts the process of implementing a new career path in which agents will earn salaries commensurate with other law enforcement officers who perform similar duties
"This is a victory that has been six years in the making and would not have happened without the persistence of many AFGE members and staff, particularly members within AFGE's National ICE Council."
AFGE and its National ICE Council would like to express our appreciation to ICE and DHS leadership for their assistance in making this critical change which is so important to ICE, its mission and its employees.
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 670,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
