*PLEASE NOTE EVENT TIME CHANGE*
WASHINGTON, June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) will release a report identifying actionable steps the public and private sectors can take to reduce rising health care costs associated with the decline of our nation's physical health and nutrition. Former U.S. Secretaries of Agriculture Dan Glickman and Ann M. Veneman and former U.S. Secretaries of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala and Mike Leavitt will headline the report release tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 9:00AM in Washington, D.C.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, increased health care costs associated with obesity in the U.S. have risen to as much as $147 billion annually or one-fifth of all health care spending. These rising costs occur as the nation struggles to get a handle on its rising debt, maintain its global competitiveness and create jobs. The report, entitled, Lots to Lose: How America's Health and Obesity Crisis Threatens our Economic Future, by BPC's Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative, will include recommendations in these priority areas: families; schools and communities; workplaces, large institutions and health care providers; and the public sector, including the U.S. military.
Secretaries Glickman, Leavitt, Shalala and Veneman will discuss the recommendations at Tuesday's press conference and answer questions. BPC president Jason Grumet will make opening remarks.
