AJC Statement on Foreign Minister Baird's Resignation
NEW YORK, Feb. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC is deeply saddened by Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird's sudden announcement that he is resigning, effective immediately. He has served as foreign minister since 2011.
"All who are committed to upholding democratic values worldwide will miss his passion and determination," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "We at AJC have cherished his indefatigable defense of democratic values and human dignity, his steadfast support for Israel and the Jewish people, and his courage and principle in speaking the truth wherever and whenever it was needed."
On two occasions, in 2012 and 2014, Baird addressed the AJC Global Forum in Washington, D.C., where he received resounding standing ovations. "Israel has no greater friend in the world today than Canada," Baird declared at the 2012 gathering.
Last May, he told the AJC audience: "We will not apologize for the positions we take because we stand for what is right." He expressed Canada's solid support for Israel, concern about the resurgence of anti-Semitism, and skepticism about Iran's nuclear intentions. "Until we are given real reasons to trust their words, Canada's sanctions will remain in full force" against Iran, Baird said.
"John Baird has been a cherished friend, and a constant source of inspiration and admiration," Harris added. "We will miss his tireless efforts, more than mere words can describe, to defend democratic values, advocate for human rights, and combat extremism and terrorism. We wish him only the best in his future endeavors."
