AK Steel Selects Middletown, Ohio's Renaissance District for its New $36 Million Research and Innovation Center
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio, Feb. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AK Steel, a world leader in the production of flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, has selected Middletown, Ohio, as the site for its new $36 million AK Steel Research and Innovation Center.
Set to break ground in the late spring or early summer of 2015, the Research and Innovation Center will be a signature corporate presence within Middletown's thriving Renaissance District. Anchoring the District's research and technology campus, the Center will be built on a highly visible site, with frontage along Interstate 75, one of the most traveled roads in the nation's interstate system.
"AK Steel is an integral part of Middletown's heritage and economy and is a valued source of intellectual capital," says Middletown Mayor Larry Mulligan Jr. "Today's announcement is the culmination of several years of effort. We are excited about the selection, and we look forward to our continued partnership with AK Steel. We appreciate the support from the county and state on this important project."
Several other site options, including some in other states, had been under consideration by AK Steel for this new project. Middletown, together with Warren County, REDI Cincinnati, JobsOhio and several private entities worked together to attract the project. Ultimately, it came down to Middletown.
"That AK Steel's new state-of-the-art Research and Innovation Center will locate in Middletown is a tremendous boon to southwest Ohio," says Denise Hamet, Middletown's director of economic development. "The selection by the company to invest in Middletown signifies confidence in the community and the region. It creates a far-reaching economic impact as a result of retaining and creating high-tech, professional positions. The location here will stimulate additional high-tech growth in the Renaissance District; it also presents a tremendous opportunity for AK Steel and the city of Middletown to build on their history of community partnership and support, collaboration and cooperative programs."

Middletown is strategically situated halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton and 96 miles from the state capital in Columbus. The region's talented and diverse workforce, extensive educational resources, business climate and quality of life combine to make Middletown a highly desirable business location.
Middletown's Renaissance District was master planned in 2005 to serve as a regional business and living center that would connect Cincinnati and Dayton through the newly rebuilt I-75 / SR 122 interchange. Anchored by the research and technology campus and a medical/bioscience campus, more than $300 million has been invested in the Renaissance District. The investment in infrastructure and transportation has been a catalyst for more development, as new and expanding companies continue to locate near the interstate for access and growth.
