Alabama Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results in Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales & Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Jan. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Alabama during 2011. Data released by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Yellowhammer State blocked the sale of more than 93,234 boxes of products containing pseudoephedrine from being sold keeping a total of nearly 220,000 grams off the street. Going further, according to the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC), from January 2011 through November 2011 compared to January 2010 through November 2010, the percentage of methamphetamine lab incidents in Alabama declined 76%.
"The real-time, stop-sale system in Alabama has had a profound impact on the battle against methamphetamine. Today, law-abiding citizens are able to access the reliable and safe medicines they need to treat everyday colds and seasonal allergies, while those seeking to exceed the legal limit when purchasing medications containing pseudoephedrine are topped at the counter," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "The facts speak for themselves and more than 93,300 blocks keeping nearly 220,000 grams off Alabama streets is a real success and demands legislators in Birmingham receive credit for enacting common sense, yet effective legislation that punishes criminals, not families and workers."
