Alarmed Durham Property Owners Offered Crash Course in Negotiating Eminent Domain Cases, Sept. 20 (Media Invited)
NC Eminent Domain Law Firm Hosts Informational Meeting for Home and Business Owners in the Path of Controversial 'East End Connector'
DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As the NC DOT begins knocking on the doors of people in the path of the controversial East End Connector, the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm will host an informational meeting to educate property owners of their rights and offer tips on how best to negotiate. The meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7p.m. at the Downtown Durham Marriott.
Property owners, press and other concerned citizens are invited to the free informational session hosted by the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm, a division of The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin.
The NC Department of Transportation has ranked the East End Connector among its top ten priorities around the state. While the project, with a forecasted budget of $182 million, is slated to start construction in April 2014, land acquisition is just getting underway.
Business and home owners, as well as community leaders have reported concern and dissatisfaction with the process.
NC Eminent Domain Law Firm Attorney Stan Abrams, a former litigator for the NC Department of Justice representing the state in eminent domain cases, will lead the session and discuss the rights property owners have when negotiating the value of their property.
"Property owners should know their rights when negotiating for their homes and businesses," Abrams said. "Unprepared property owners may end up settling with the NC DOT for less than they should."
The Independent Weekly devoted a major story to concerns about the project, noting, "The highway, cloverleafs and ramps will carve up adjoining neighborhoods, which must endure noise, pollution and an indelibly altered community. And some owners worry that the Department of Transportation won't compensate them fairly."
In the Indy story, Deborah Milan of Angier Avenue is quoted as saying, "You pay the house off with what they give you, and you may not have enough left over to buy a new house. We'll just have to get a trailer. I sure don't want to go back out in no rental."
